Edge computing is a new approach, in the context of distributed and decentralized IT architectures capable of reducing the amount of data to be sent to the cloud, of processing critical data, by transmitting information to a smart device located nearby. The less ‘time-sensitive’ data can instead be transmitted to the cloud infrastructure or to the data center, to allow more complex processing, such as the analysis of big data through AI and the use of machine learning algorithms to refine learning.

To meet these new needs and data management methods, Tera has created the BeetaTM Box e GIoE Edge Computers that allow professional solutions and services that adapt to different application areas such as energy measurement, building / plant management, static monitoring of infrastructure, SIndustry 4.0, and e-mobility.

It is becoming increasingly important, in many application sectors, for companies and individuals:

  • to have an alternative or a redundancy with respect to the Cloud for the processing and use of data in near real time, robust, safe and reliable way;
  • the possibility of collecting field data from different sensors, with different brand and model (over 80 devices already tested).

Tera’s open approach allows pur edge compuers to communicate with third party software and hardware ensuring maximum flexibility.

GIoE can be equipped with over 10 communication protocols and can perform algorithms of all kinds thanks to its computational properties.

Here are the key features:

  • 1 GHz ARM Cortex A7 clock processor, with up to 2 GB of RAM, 8 GB of flash memory (soldered) whose memory capacity is expanded through 2 128 GB SD cards, one that can be inserted from the outside and one from the internal; RTC
  • integrated IoT wireless modules (WiFi, Bluetooth, NB-IoT or alternatively 2G / 3G / 4G – with or without GPS, wMBus 169 MHz or, alternatively, w-Mbus 868 MHz)
  • 2 RS485 ports (eg Modbus, BACnet, SUnSPec) – master or, optionally, slave with software interface development, CANbus, Ethernet and GBit Ethernet;
  • 1x HDMI and 4x additiona USB to easily expand the GIoE control unit including “dongle” modules such as Zwave, KNX, EnOcean and others;
  • I / O (digital and analog) which also allow you to obtain data directly from sensors (e.g. dry contact, S0, Thermocouples), or to drive external loads (Dry Contact, internal Open Collector, to control relay modules); optional TPM security module;
  • push botton, also programmable, signal led;
  • plastic case format 9M DIN-RAIL, external power supply, optional internal battery.

Designed for indoor applications, the Beeta BOX is equipped with 4 sensors on board, temperature, humidity and air pressure, microphone), and an acoustic-luminous interface (speakers and LEDs with circular crown, programmable multicolour) which allows you to interact with the user and report any anomalies.

The open approach and the reading of 1G and 2G tax electricity meters (smart meters)

Our edge computers designed for IoT ecosystems are multi-protocol and based on the LINUX Embedded platform. The use of standardized communication protocols and interfaces make these electronic control units two unprecedented multiprotocol gateways on the market that allow full configurability, modularity and scalability.

BeetaTM Box e GIoE are compatible with various free-of-charge open source software tools, such as the OSGI OpnenHab “FRAMEWORK” and the MQTT, REST / API, NODE-RED, HomeAssistant, OPC-UA, as well as the FIN FRAMEWORK of J2Innovation (a Siemens company), a powerful and flexible software environment. They are also able to communicate to read the 1G and 2G e-distribution smart electric meters (“smart meters”) in “Plug & play” mode via PLC.

Different using options:

without software: the customer installs Linux and other SW tools

with Linux pre-installed: developed by Tera (ArmBian); various software protocols, tools and open source frameworks can be used, such as NodeRed, Home Assistant etc .; It is also possible to use some OPC-UA compliant tools

with pre-installed Linux + JVM + middleware (OSGI compliant) customized by TERA and some “drivers” developed by Tera, including any MQTT configured to send data to an MQTT broker (third-party “IoT platform”)

with pre-installed Linux + JVM + “FIN FRAMEWORK” (by J2 Innovation- Siemens Company); thanks to the FIN framework, it complies with the Project Haystack open source initiative which facilitates the IoT approach

Open Plug & Play solutions: the interoperability agreement with J2 Innovation Inc

Tera ensures full compatibility with SW, development environments and open source frameworks, both free and paid, such as the innovative FIN Framework platform of the Californian company J2 Innovation Inc. (a Siemens Group company).
